How to Play
Forgot the rules? It happens. Here’s a quick refresher so you can get back to the game.
How to Play Oh Hell
Predict your tricks. Make your bid. Score the bonus.
The Goal
The goal is to correctly predict how many tricks you will win in each hand. Every trick you win is worth 1 point. If you win exactly the number of tricks you bid, you also earn a 10-point bonus.
Setup & Dealing
Use a standard 52-card deck with the Jokers removed.
The first hand is dealt with 1 card per player. Each new hand increases by 1 card per player until the maximum possible hand is reached while still leaving at least 1 card in the deck to establish trump.
After the largest hand is played, the number of cards decreases by 1 each hand until the game returns to a final 1-card hand.
The dealer rotates to the next player after every hand.
Trump
After the cards are dealt, turn over the next card remaining in the deck. The suit of that card becomes trump for the hand.
The game never deals so many cards that there is no card left to flip for trump.
Bidding
After looking at their cards, each player bids the number of tricks they think they will win during the hand. A bid of zero is allowed.
Bidding goes around the table, with the dealer bidding last.
The dealer must upset the bids. The dealer cannot make a bid that causes the total number of bids to equal the number of available tricks.
If there are 5 tricks available and the other players have bid a total of 4 tricks, the dealer cannot bid 1.
Playing a Trick
The player to the dealer's left leads the first trick by playing any card from their hand.
Play continues clockwise. Each player must follow the suit that was led if they have a card of that suit.
If a player does not have the suit that was led, they may play any card, including a trump card.
The highest card of the suit led wins the trick unless a trump card is played. If one or more trump cards are played, the highest trump card wins the trick.
The player who wins the trick leads the next trick.
Scoring
Every trick you win is worth 1 point, whether or not you made your original bid.
If the number of tricks you win exactly matches your bid, you receive an additional 10-point bonus.
| Bid | Tricks Won | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0 | 10 |
| 2 | 2 | 12 |
| 3 | 3 | 13 |
| 3 | 2 | 2 |
| 1 | 3 | 3 |
Winning the Game
Continue playing as the hand size increases to the maximum and then decreases back down to 1 card per player.
After the final 1-card hand is scored, the player with the highest total score wins.
